One design racing is a major part of Ullman Sails Long Beach Race Week. The J70 class showed up as the largest class with 27 boats. The talent, skill and fun ran deep with World, Olympic, America's Cup and National Champions sailing this weekend.

Here's how it went down:
Predicted medium westerly winds never showed up on Friday and Saturday. In its place was a light and shifting southerly that fluctuated 15-20 degrees and up and down from 7-9 knots of wind with the early arrival of cloud cover from the cooler ocean. The upwind legs needed some left off the start line, get right with the puffs and then the left paid time after time on final approach to the windward mark. Downwind was all about staying in the starboard gybe "train" until the fleet made a one and in gybe for the leeward gates. Some boats tried gybing back to the middle of the course for more options when approaching the gate. But, too much bad air from the 26 boats coming downwind in the light air made the move rarely pay off but resulted in loosing a couple of places. Trust me, we tried it on USA-32 in race1 and went from 5th to 12th in half a downwind leg! Oops! The leeward gate was another opportunity to gain and loose positions. The J70's were the 4th start on the alpha course, so this meant the leeward gate was sometimes won and lost battling with Farr 40's and J120's for buoy room and most importantly clear wind. The final upwind was not a piece of cake (btw, Scott Deardorff's "Cake" USA-351did win 2 races) because the wind would still be shifting 15-20 degrees with puffs from the left. So, settling in for simply going left or right after the gate was not going to keep your spot. USA-32 had a bad gate choice in race 5 entering in 6th but when crossing boats up the course from the opposite gate was now in 12th or 13th. Playing the left-middle-left USA-32 climbed back into 4th by the final windward mark. Definitely no time to breath or relax! There was passing in every puff and slight wind change. On Sunday the wind finally came up to 10-12 for both races to have a great day of sailing and final showdown for the J70 class. Flojito y Cooperando led with Sugoi, Midlife Crisis, USA32, Catapult and Minor Threat in hot pursuit and staying consistent would determine the podium positions after race 7. More wind does not mean easier racing. The better wind but shifty wind made the combo of boat speed and tactics the secret ingredient. Catapult and Minor Threat made a move to the front, but Flojito y Cooperando and Midlife Crisis stayed consistent (there is that word again) with a 1-6 and 5-5 finish to take 1st and 2nd place for the weekend. Catapult and Minor Threat finished strong to take 3rd and 4 the place. USA-32 finished with a 6-8 on Sunday to tie Minor Threat, but moved to 5th for the weekend.

Ullman Sails LBRW was a homecoming of sorts for Ed Feo's team "Loco." The C&C30 has spent the past few months racing on the East Coast racing exclusively in One Design Regattas with a third place showing at Key West Race Week being the standout performance. Ed was looking forward to bringing the boat home to race in home waters and did just that when he entered Ullman Sails LBRW.

We found ourselves in the PHRF Sportboat Class that included a Melges 20, two J-80's, Melges 32 and a Bolt 37. It would prove to be a somewhat predictable scenario as a spread of over 100 seconds tends to spread the fleet out.

The first two days were not "sportboat" conditions and the boats were in full displacement mode as the respective tacticians worked the shifts. We had great starts on Loco and good boat handling. Tactically we were sound and felt that our boat speed was where it should be

Light air made it difficult for us to stay in touch with the Bolt 37 and their tall rig. They sailed well and dominated the regatta from beginning to end.

After three days of racing we ended up third but still had smiles on our faces as we always make sure of having a good time. We had some moments of frustration in the light air but shifted gears well and learned more about the new (ish) boat.

The Random Leg A class was a mix of mostly notable classic California downwind flyers and a few eclectic designs. Final class results were almost the order of fastest to slowest ratings!

Fighting for line honors each race were the two big boys- the ageless & much decorated SC-70 Grand Illusion (scratch boat) and the always speedy Medicine Man (Andrews 63) who proved to be the fastest over the weekend scoring 1st in each of the three races.

With the two big boats way out front, it was the four SC-52’s (Elyxir, Relentless, Triumph and Paranoia) and the Farr 49 Javelin battling for a clean lane each leg, every race. At the end of the weekend Elyxir ended on top of this group, earning the 3rd place in class behind Med Man and GI.

And chasing the 52’s and Javelin was a trio of smaller boats. Of the smaller boats it was J-125 Timeshaver who sailed fast & well enough to end up 7th in the 10 boat class. Rounding out the class was the Antrim Class 40 Yippee Kai Yay and the Farr 40 Wild Thing.

"Awesome day today on the sweet J-111, Picosa! We had a rough start in the first race, being forced over early at the gun. However, we were able to escape freely to the left side of the fleet and hooked into a nice left shift to bounce us back to mid fleet by the first mark. Out boat speed was great all day. Since it's PHRF, it's often hard to get exact bearings on other boats in the fleet since everyone has different modes for their boats. But overall we felt like we were gaining all the time. Every downwind it seemed like we were able to hook into nice pressure and soak just a few degrees lower than the competition. This helped us rally back in our first race to 4th across the line, and 3rd on corrected time for the race.

Our second start was just we wanted. We were able to hold a lane off the pin and tack on to port as soon as we wanted. With the breeze as far left as 185, we knew port tack would be the long tack. We hooked into the left shift and pushed out to starboard lay line. We rounded the top mark in 4th. From there, the tight fleet covered each other around the course, leaving us with another 3rd place, corrected.

The third race was quite similar. The race committee postponed the start after the warning to reset the line. This left us with a boat favored start line. We started in the middle of the line with great speed and a great lane. We were able to tack to port and progress up the course while crossing bows. We continued out right while the leaders crossed us and fought each other to the middle left. We rounded close behind in 4th at the top mark. We chased down 3rd place to round even with them, but had a rough douse around the mark. Unfortunately we all know how important boat handling is! We rounded the top mark just behind the other J111 in the fleet, Stampede. It was quite the battle downwind with them, but we were able to narrowly beat them out at the line to finish 3rd, (yes...again) corrected.

Day 2 racing in the J70 Class was tight with the RC hoisting the I flag on all three races to keep the general recalls to a minimum. All three races got off with only one general recall. Not bad. However, the wind prediction was for more wind but the wind stayed between 180 and 200° at 6 to 9knots.
This lighter wind really put stress on the skipper and crew to keep the boat moving fast but take some tacks to stay in the best lanes for wind and current. Basically you had to risk a little to get a little.
USA-32 led the first race at the windward mark and leeward gate. In the light and shifty conditions, it proved difficult to cover the left and right by sailing the left middle and right middle, getting passed by 4 boats from the far left before the windward mark. USA 32 finished 5th with Scott D's CAKE taking a well deserved first place.

Race 2 showed no increase in breeze with the wind staying left. Getting a front row start in the 26 boat fleet is crucial for a good lane. rounding in the top six at the first buoy USA 32 had a good spinnaker hoist and held a good starboard lane all the way to the gybe. First to the gate was catapult, we picked the left gate because the right gate had more traffic. USA 32 rounded the gate in good standing, but shortly found out the other gate had better wind and leverage, giving them an immediate advantage. The goal on the upwind legs was to get to a corner, preferably the left, but not too far. Catapult led again and held their lead, with a strong 2nd place finish by Flojito y Cooperando. With a semi shrimp hoist at the mark, USA 32 slipped a place or two, and finished 8th.

Race 3 began with the race committee resetting the line and buoys because of an even more left shift. We couldn't believe these conditions in long beach, we are scratching our heads wondering if we were racing in San Diego or Newport Beach! USA 26, USA 32, and Sugoi fought for the pin with USA 26 getting an early lead on the left side. USA 32 sailed a little too conservative by not sailing up towards the port layline for the final approach to the buoy. By coming in on starboard tack, this left the door open for boats to slip in from the left. USA 32 rounded mid fleet with a good hoist, and switched to attack mode. Staying on starboard gybe, as part of the J70 downwind train, USA 32 passed a couple of boats that gybed out early. At the leeward gate, USA 32 had caught up with most of the top 10, and had opted for the right favored, but more crowded gate. This proved to be a good tactic, letting USA 32 sail out the the left where there was still an increase in pressure and a steady left shift. On the final beat, USA 32 sailed the left middle and had some success passing boats and finishing strong.

It was a great day racing and we are happy with the performance and our effort so far. One more day!
The annual Ullman Sails Long Beach Race Week kicked off yesterday in fine fashion. Fourteen different classes grace the Long Beach Sailing venue with the J-70 fleet calling the honors of largest fleet. Ullman Sails is well represented in the J-70 fleet and Ullman Sails Newport Beach owner, Bruce Cooper, weighs in with his report after two races:

"After the first day of racing USA 32 was in fifth place overall with first place only five points ahead. Our takeaways from the day were trying to sail with the pressure was which meant on the left side of the course most the time and important to have the rig softened up slightly give you more speed in the average wind. We're looking forward to tomorrow with 3 races and a forecast for more wind. Race one started a normal fashion with a large fleet of 26 boats with the general recall. Forcing the race committee to raise the I flag to keep all anxious racers behind the line. The wind was 8 kn with small puffs to nine. J 70 USA 32 started left side and and and arrives at the first mark in fifth place. Halfway down the run we decided to gybe to give more us more opportunities at the gate which proved to be a big mistake! Getting to the gate in about 13th place. On the next windward mark the wind started to go left as the cloud cover came in early. USA 32 positioned left middle and started to crawl back towards the front with the left shift. At the next windward mark the top eight boats rounded cleanly and set spinnakers while the rest of us all battled for a finish in the top 10. Finishing 11th, we knew this would be a tough class to catch up if you have a bad mark rounding or tactical mistake.

Race 2 started with complete cloud cover and a 40° shift to the left making the pin and desirable for the large J70 the class. However, USA 32 started at the committee boat and quickly tacked to port tack to take advantage of the left shift at the start. Two thirds of the way up to the first buoy USA 32 tacked to starboard in slight right shift and was clearly crossing the fleet that started mid or left side of the start line. Rounding the mark in first place USA 32 set the spinnaker and led all the way to the gate taking the starboard buoy to come back out to the left shift. USA 32 led the fleet to the second mark until about 300 yards from the buoy where lesson number one of tacking on your competition and lead to the favored side is a must. USA 26 passed USA 32 150 yards from the windward mark. The top 5 boats defended their positions after the set with a long starboard leg, USA 32 gybed on the first puff, trying to put some pressure on the first place boat. After one more gybe, the boats converged at the finish line, with USA 26 finishing 3 boat lengths ahead of USA 32."
Great reporting from an uber competitive class. The Fast 50 class is proving to be competitive and the top two TP 52's are battling is out. FOX is narrowly ahead of Margaritaville with two days of racing to go. We except some good stuff from this fleet!

PHRF A has a plethora of 30-40ft yachts and it is the Mexican Divorce leading the charge! Second is the new J-111"Picosa."

Long time Ullman friend John Laun is proving fast in the J-120 fleet once again! He powered to a 2,1 for the opening day to put his team one point ahead of the competitive "Jim."

PHRF B is a battle of the 30 footers with the classic J-35 "Rival" leading the way. Ullman powered Tartan 101 "Mistral" is second and the J-105 "Off the Porch" third. More tight racing coming their way!

Random Leg A sees a wide spread in ratings and the big boys got the better on race one. Kenny Cooper on the Class 40 "Yippe Kai Yay" is looking for some more breeze so they can get up on the step and see what the girl can do. Viggo Torbensen on the J-125 "Timeshaver" reported getting a plastic bag stuck on the sail drive, his team is hoping to avoid trash today!

Over on the Sportboat class Keith Magnussen is racing with team "Loco" on the C&C30 One Design. Owner Ed Feo brought the boat back from the east coast for this event and they are sitting in third after two light air races.

More to come over the weekend and we are looking forward to some wind!

NorCal and get the opportunity to race with their sons as crew. They last sailed together on the Cooper Family Capo 30 "Instinct" over 28 years ago.
The 2016 San Diego Yachting Cup was the debut and first opportunity to race together with the new/old boat and the boys. Morgan Cooper is 16 and fairly new to racing, crewing mostly on a J105 and other PHRF keel boats, whereas Conner (age 12) is the Opti sailor getting loads of small boat sailing and coaching. They both bring experience and young muscles to help race the boat with their dads!
Shawn and Bruce jumped on the boat Saturday morning with the "newbie" crew and headed for the race course in the mist/rain with a southerly wind blowing down the channel hoping for a smooth day of sailing.
Well, light to moderate wind with a huge chop made for a not smooth day of sailing and learning how to sail the J70 extra tough. The J70 fleet is very keen on rig tuning and sailing technique to keep the boats powered up. Watching Jeff Janov's Minor Threat and Chris Raab's Sugoi followed by Dave Vieregg's Soggy Dollar take off in race one showed that the rig settings being on the soft side for the extra choppy water conditions and tactics for staying in the wind lanes was key to keeping the foot on the accelerator. USA-32 was right behind these boats at the weather mark, but with only one practice hoist before the race, the spinnaker hoisted in a knot and needed to be lowered down to the deck to be sorted out. With the spinnaker freed up and re-hoisted USA-32 missed the gybe on the top of the course and sailed the majority of the 1st run in lower wind pressure and missed a big shift. Oooops.
By the end of the two lap race, USA-32 had speed to get back to 5th place, Minor Threat led wire to wire, very impressive.
Minor Threat is owned and skippered by Jeff Janov who has his two young sons Grant and Jordan crewing along side long time shipmate Doug McLean and J70 guru Victor Diaz. Jeff and his program are really what the J70 is about, friends and family sailing together.

The wind continued to build to 9-11 knots for the next two races which gave the skipper and crew some more ammunition to punch through the heavy chop and confused seas. A major part of racing in San Diego besides wind and water tactical considerations is kelp and sea grass management. It is a known fact that you will get kelp and grass on the keel and rudder. A huge part of your performance for speed, pointing, acceleration and holding a lane is not sail trim, rig tension, steering or hiking...it is if you have a small (or large) piece of kelp or grass on the foils! USA-32 felt having the kelp cutter in use once per tack and once per gybe on the down wind leg kept us confident that we were clear of the large pieces. The secret weapon on USA-32 was 65# Conner who could go to the back of the boat and wipe the rudder with the kelp stick and not disturb the boat too much!
The wind dropped again for race#4 and the rig settings back to under base was key to making the boat groove in the chop and light winds. Minor Threat showed the fleet again around the course putting another 1st place on the score sheet as a bookend to their 1-4-2-1 day. Sugoi was very consistent with 2-3-3-2 and USA-32 showed 4-2-1-4 to end the day with a win in Race#3 and get some good quality time in the boat with the boys learning their jobs on the boat.

Sunday's racing was looking like a more traditional San Diego day of racing with flatter seas and more south to south-west wind, but still plenty of kelp and grass! The wind started to move to the right and the cloud cover was burning off fast, so it was looking like a fast course where speed and tactics would prevail.
USA-32 came out of the start blocks with a mishap during the first tack
Shawn stepped on the main sheet and it rolled under his foot landing him
face down in the cockpit still holding the tiller and main sheet! Shawn
thought he chipped a tooth and was seeing starts, but came away with
only a cut and scrape on his right cheek. Not the best way to start the
day as you try to climb into the leaders points!
Sugoi and Minor Threat came out battling each other for the 1-2 spot with Soggy Dollar showing in 3rd and Huckleberry skippered by Jim Murrell coming up to 4th place in race#5.

The next two races (#6 & #7) had a steady shift to the right and a little more pressure. Race#6 USA-32 started with a delayed start at the RC boat and tacked right towards Pt Loma to get the shift and a little more pressure on the right. At the weather mark, the young crew on USA-32 were getting the system down for hoisting the spin and furling the jib, the spinnaker went up and filled perfectly, job well done boys. Approaching the leeward mark (no gate), Sugoi sailed in close to USA-32 to make a tight mark rounding, but no overlap could be established, so USA-32 rounded first and took off to the right side again. Sugoi made a clearing tack to the left and searched out for some more pressure, but the right kept looking stronger for shift and more pressure. The J105 fleet started 6 minutes ahead of the J70's, so USA-32 could use them as a barometer for where and how much wind was blowing. The J105's were leaning over good on the right side of the course, so that's the spot to be. USA-32 led the fleet back to the finish followed by Steve Wyman's Nunuhunu and Raab's Sugoi. Minor Threat got caught up in traffic and finished 6th, having Sugoi ahead by 2 points going into the final race. The boys on USA-32 were very happy to have another win and be a little closer to the top of the leader board.
Chris Raab's crew is a good combo of his daughter Kayla and Long Beach speed racer Keith Ives and pro sailor and local San Diego hero Jake LaDow. The crew work on Sugoi is very consistent and their finishes show them at the top of the leader board every regatta. Sugoi finished 1st Corinthian at the 2015 J70 NA's in these same waters last fall.
Race#7 was setting up to be very much like Race#6. Boats bunched up at the committee boat to get the early jump to the right. In the final two minutes up to the start, USA-32 skipper Shawn Bennett said it seems like the wind is in right phase, so starting down the line to avoid the crunch at the RC boat end was a good idea. USA-32 started closer to the pin and stayed on Starboard tack till the first sign of a left shift came through about 4-5 minutes after the start and tacked in a left puff and shift and sailed with speed straight across the middle of the course. At this point the group of boats that tacked towards Pt Loma immediately after the start were coming out of the right side against the left shift which put USA-32 in the lift-lift phase half way up the beat and a 15 boat lead. Sugoi and Minor Threat were busy tacking and boat on boat battling to try to finish 1-2 for the regatta, definitely preoccupied with the race within the race.
USA-32 led by a large margin all the way the 4 laps W-L-W-F to take another 1st place while Soggy Dollar showed strong with a 2nd place followed by Sugoi and Minor Threat.

After a discard, the strong 1-1 finish to end the regatta on USA-32 was enough to net 13 points to take 1st Place with Minor Threat and Sugoi at 14 points with Minor Threat winning the tie breaker and placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Soggy Dollar finished in 4th place with 17 points and 5th was Nunuhunu.

Shawn and Bruce were real proud of their young crew with their first time in the J70. The boys were a major part of the success this weekend. The extra speed as the wind picked up was nice which led to easier tactics and race course management. At the end of the day, the J70's that sailed at Yachting Cup all had a good mix of friends and family, the boat lends itself to fun and competitive racing. A good kelp pole for the rudder is a must in SoCal racing, especially San Diego, good job Conner keeping the rudder clean of kelp and grass!
USA-32 will be racing more in SoCal and NorCal with Cal Race Week, U/S Long Beach Race Week, West Coast Champs and Summer Keel, Rolex BBS and J70 Worlds onthe schedule.
California Yacht Club hosted the 2016 J-70 Midwinter Championship for the West Coast this past weekend and eight of the popular little sport boats showed up to vie for the title. The J-70 fleet has become uber competitive with the top professionals in the country being flown in to race on various boats. This makes fleet that much more compelling to race in.
USA 32 was featured on the course and was using a full set of J-70 Ullman Sails including a brand new jib design. The regatta was tight all the way through as Chris Raab's "Sugoi" and USA 32 battled it out at the front of the fleet. The shifty conditions allowed for some passing lanes and lead changes and positions were frequently changing. USA 32 sailed the more consistent regatta and ended up with a healthy 5 point lead over the second place Sugoi.
Racing in Mexico for a week after a 1000 mile offshore race is a great way to slowly acclimatize back to the real world. Or is there a real world that we have to be concerned with? Depends on who you ask I assume!

In case you are unfamiliar with the MEXORC regatta I will fill you in on what you need to know. 10 Races spread out over a week with a lay day in the middle. 15-20kts of wind every day, warm water, good food, and of course you are in Mexico. Already planning your 2018 regatta? You should be!

Having a few different disciplines in this regatta makes each day fresh. Between the W/L, random leg and pursuit racing there is something for everyone. You need to be able to shift gears and manage your boat in a variety of conditions. This makes it very exciting and ads a dynamic that is not prevalent during regattas these days.

Three classes comprised of a variety of yachts made the regatta an interesting spectacle. In class three the racing was so tight that only a half a point separated first through third! The twelve boat fleet had some super close racing and the intensity of the crews and skippers was on display before and after the sailing. Everyone was looking to win! In the end "Nueva Luna" came out the champion after winning the ti breaker. Nueva Luna was powered by Ullman Carbon Phantom sails and had Ullman San Diego team member Chuck Skewes on board to help the team to victory!

Class two was where I found myself for the week. On board Viggo Torbensen's J-125 "Timeshaver" we had a full crew of ten. We had tough competition with Farr 40's and Sana Cruz 50's both offering something different for us to be concerned with. Our regatta started poorly as I led us to a terrible start on the opening day. The crew work was fantastic but my starting was showing some rustiness.

We managed to overcome the first day and sail consistently for the rest of the week and even won the class outright before the final day! Highlights were winning both the pursuit and random leg races overall! We finished both races with our 5A up and flogging main as we did about 16kts into the finish! The new Rasta colored spinnaker filled the bay with colors and was a fan favorite.
The big boys battled it out in class one and in the end it was the TP52 "Vincitore" that recovered from a tough first day to win the regatta! Vincitore used their Ullman Carbon Main, Carbon Code 1 jib and Ullman spinnakers to lead the way. Second was the Ullman powered Ruahatu with Ullman Newport Owner Bruce Cooper crewing. Ruahatu were leading the regatta but could not hold on as the final day saw tough conditions. Great job by one of the smaller boats in the fleet!

As I sit and reflect on the midway point in the 2016 MEXORC regatta only one thought
remains constant, fun. The atmosphere only Puerto Vallarta lends to the flavor of
this event. City front views are the backdrop for a group or racers who came from
all over to compete in this bi-annual event.
Team Timeshaver, Viggo Torbemsen's J-125, traveled from Laguna Beach California and
again am fortunate to be part of the team. For this event we have been sailing with
ten people and really could do with one more. Our competition comes in the form of
four Farr 40's and two Santa Cruz 50's. It's a great fleet and the pedigree of
sailors is large.
Our racing started on Sunday and we came off rusty. After sailing 1000 miles in the
PV race I was a bit off my game during the first start of a buoy event. We ended up
a bit late and found it hard to fight our way back through all the bad air and lack
of passing lanes. One race on Sunday meant we had to wait a day to recover. And
recover we did. The crew work on day two was amazing and we had a great start in
the first race that helped us lead the race around every mark. The SC-50 Horizon
was nipping at our heels and the Farr 40's we making us nervous with their upwind
presence. We sailed clean and won the race outright.

Race three saw the wind increase and we switched out to the number 3 headsail. This
time we were over early along with Horizon and Foil. We stayed positive and worked
ourselves into third by the first mark. With the wind up we knew the J-125 was
getting to her sweet spot.... Planing. And away we went. The SC-50 Horizon was
still ahead on the final upwind leg and had a decent lead. We chose to gybe really
late and ended up planing to leeward and passing by on the way to the finish and
another bullet. The team was clicking now.
After some buoy racing why not change it up a bit? Tuessday comprised of the
pursuit race which meant whoever crossed the finish line first one. This is a big
day and a nice overall prize is always coveted. Well we thought we saw that
evaporate as we had a terrible upwind leg towards Punta Mita. The downwind was not
much better as we got stuck in a hole and watched our competition sail away. What
happened next, well we got a bit lucky. The boats in front of us went towards the
ocean for fear of a developing hole. But when we arrived that hole was gone and we
skirted along the beach jib reaching at nine knots! We passed all our boats in our
class and rounded the final mark in about fourth place overall.
Sail changes are always going to happen in a race like this and I would like to take
this moment to say our bowman jack Maranto was excellent. We had the 2A up, Rasta
Kite, and with the wind swinging forward I brought the 5A on deck. Jack and the
crew executed a perfect change and we romped to the finish to claim the first
overall honors!
Great way to go into a lay day!

A new year always starts with new plans and goals for us in our work, life and our sailing! As the sailing season starts, take some time to write down what your goals are for the coming year. Share these with your crew and ask what they have for goals, you might be surprised they are very similar or goals that you never thought of! I like to do goal setting and use the KISS technique. The Keep It Simple &Stupid "KISS" approach gives me a realistic and obtainable list of goals. But I do list one or two goals that are ranked high and a reach for me and the crew to not settle for the easy, but have some push and motivation.

Some standard goals for a sailing team are:

1. Attend more (or all) races on the schedule

2. Practice the day before or an hour before the first race on Saturday

3. Recruit new crew who can help accomplish goals 1&2! Hahaha

4. Hire a coach or bring a professional sailor onboard to fine tune crew work

5. Identify and work on boat/ team weakness -for example: bad spinnaker work, bad mark roundings, slow speed when wind strengthens.

6. Get sails and rigging dialed in for maximum performance - recuts and repairs, replace a sail?

7. Get boat optimized- remove extra weight, mast tuned, bottomed smoothed and faired!

8. Crew debrief after racing, keep notes while racing and talk about good & bad events of the day. -this keeps the crew focused on moving forward mentally and physically so the crew does not keep making the "same" mistakes.

9. Keep maintenance up so there is more time racing and less time repairing or going back to the dock.

10. Bring FUN every race, this is recreation and a great sport to do with family and friends, make this happen every time you go sailing!

Picture by Onne van der Wal

BONUS GOALS: These are the goals that are not easy, you need to reach a little further and dig down a little deeper to make this happen.

1. Pick a bigger regatta (ie MEXORC, Corum Cup, Long Distance Race) and commit to it. Aim for the top 3 spots in your class! Get the crew organize, dedicate time for practice and racing before. Get a sail or sails that will make you competitive in conditions where the boat has been lacking.

2. Do some cross training and skipper or crew on smaller boats. Sail or Race in Valle on J24, J70 and get some more "water" time. The fact is the more you do something, the better you will become at it. Smaller boats help you get back to CORE sailing principles that will only help you as a sailor on the bigger boats!

Now, get out your laptop or tablet ( or your pencil and paper like I do) and make your goals. Write them down and commit you and your crew to achieving them. At the end of the year, let's review them and see how many goals we achieved.

YOU CAN DO IT! see you on the water soon, bring your fun and goals and have a great 2016 sailing season!

We came, we adventured, we sailed and we represented the LBC well. Third place finish in a fleet packed with top level professionals and excellent amateurs was deemed a huge success for us on "Loco."

Ed Feo and our team worked seamlessly together over the course of the past week and we improved each day to become one of the most consistently sailed boats on the course. Of course we had our moments with an over early and a foul at a weather mark when sitting in second place, but we recovered from those mistakes well to stay positive which is always important in a long regatta.

Erik Shampain, our tactician, played a huge role in boat preparation and on the water leadership. The final day was tough and we had some work to do if we wanted to leapfrog "Bobsled" and capture a top three finish. We were over early but chose the correct side of the course and immediately passed our competitors above us in the rankings. The race was close until Bobsled shrimped their spinnaker behind us to essentially cost them the race and the bronze position on the podium.

The wind on the final day ranged from 17-25kts with a squall coming through at the end of the race to literally wipe out many of the boats in the various classes. One Melges 24 lost their rig in the melee. Dustin Durant and Ben Whealtey played their role well as trimming the boat in conditions was nothing short of difficult. Downwind Dustin was key in keeping the boat upright and moving at pace down the course.

Of course on the bow, Cody Schlub, executed perfectly as Dave Millet backed him up in the pit. It is always satisfying to see the team you helped put together work so well.

If someone would have told me that we had a chance for third I would have been skeptical, given the competition and talent, but we worked hard, practiced, had the right sails and continually went forward during the week.

Big thank you to Ed Feo for making this all happen and for working with myself and Ullman Sails Newport Beach.

Keith Magnussen from Ullman Sails Newport Beach checks in after four days at Key West Race Week.

When we left the LBC (Long Beach California for those unfamiliar) we had hopes of learning a lot about the boat and being in the mix. After three days of racing, and one non-sailing day, we are tied for third in the ultra competitive C&C30 class. There is a mixture of Olympic, Americas Cup, and world champion sailors around us that we are just excited to sail against on a level playing field in a boat like the C&C30.

I will not bore you with play by play details but there have been some exciting moments and the racing has been FUN! Tight mark roundings and close fleet racing has made the event even more exciting. We have worked hard on the rig tune and the sails are performing excellent.

Today we switched up spinnakers twice and made a few jib changes as the wind strengths vary. It is important to know when to put the bow up for speed and a low plane versus VMG mode. Our 1.5A that we use for bow up has proved fast and our VMG runner is keeping us moving in the light stuff.

Upwind we started with the Code 1 jib for the light choppy stuff and ended the day in our Code 2 as the wind increased.

Crew work has been amazing. Our coach, Brent Ruhne, has given us confidence that we are one of the cleanest boats at all the mark rounding. Cody Schlub (bow), Dave Millet (Pit), Ben Wheatley (Mid bow), and Dustin Durant (Trim) work together seamlessly and quietly which allows us to push the envelope a bit more.

Erik Shampain on the tactics has done a great job keeping us in the top of the fleet. He has a calm demeanor and understanding of all aspects of the boat, this is vital in a leader in my opinion. When I recruited Erik for the position I was confident that he would be the right guy to move us forward.

I am trimming main on the boat and am working hard to keep Ed in the groove by paying particularly close attention to the heel angle. I have also found it really crucial to anticipate the wind and be slightly ahead of the curve in order to keep the rudder straight and not fight the sails.

One more day and we are hoping to move up a but in the standings and make the West Coast proud!

Keith Magnussen reports from team "Loco" in the C&C 30 One Design Division:

Today marked a first for team Loco, we raced against other C&C 30's, and it felt good. We had a steep learning curve and learned a lot as we figured out what mode was working best in the conditions handed us. Yesterdays wind and weather left some steep chop which proved tough to negotiate.

Our first race was up and down as we tried to match the other boats around us and see where we needed to improve. It was tough going in the beginning but we rapidly improved and had a great last leg to get into 6th place. We were happy with a mid fleet finish and went about making some tuning adjustments. The breeze was on in the first race and all the boats elected to use their heavy short hoist jibs. We found it a bit tough upwind but made some more adjustments and kept it together well on the downwind to finish 5th. Good start to the day.

Second race we had a mix up on the clock and started late.... We passed some boats but were unable to really get back into the mix. Good learning lesson.

The third race saw the wind die to about 15kts and we had a great start at the leeward end and enjoyed fantastic speed out to the left side of the course and a nice left shift. Third around the first mark felt good and showed our adjustments were truly helping the boat speed. Downwind we felt even better and held onto the third spot as we rounded the right gate. Once again a shift from the left came through and we got in front of Extreme 2 and rounded the weather mark in first. Extreme 2 was fast downwind but had trouble on their gybe. We held onto the lead and had one more upwind to go. As the fleet behind us split we tried to cover the closer boats but the wind ended up going further left than before!

Close finish with Checkmate gave us second place and even though we were a little disappointed we still felt good!

A few more rig tune adjustments this morning and we will be back at it. Breeze on today and the weather is cold!

Southern California based "Loco" has been in Key West since Tuesday and are in the final preparation stages before the racing starts tomorrow. Keith Magnussen from Ullman Sails Newport Beach gives us this update:

It has been a long build up for team "Loco" and yesterday we finally had the chance to sail next to another C&C 30, which was exciting since this is a crucial aspect of preparing for any one design regatta.

Owner, Ed Feo, purchased Loco around a year ago with the intentions of going East to match up at some of the great events the class had organized. Ed approached me and inquired about putting together a team and wanted to get the most out of the boat. We recruited Erik Shampain (Tactician), Cody Schlub (Bow), Dustin Durant (Trim), Ben Wheatley (Trim), Dave Millet (Pit), and myself on main. Brent Ruhne has joined us as a coach which is extremely valuable when trying to learn a new boat.

Cody and myself arrived on Tuesday to start putting the boat back together after the long drive from Long Beach. Erik was next to show up and if you have worked with Erik and Cody then you know that our boat is now in the water, working great and looking good.

Ullman Sails Newport Beach furnished the sails with Bruce Hollis leading the design team. We worked on rig tune yesterday and after some tuning we started feeling confident in the shapes and were ready to line up against some other boats... finally.

The next few hours were so valuable, we managed to see how important it is to work the boat upwind with communication vital as any chop and light spot really took a toll on boat speed. When it was time for some practice starts and short w/l races we felt that we had improved enough to hang.

It was just good to be near 5 other boats. In the end we had great upwind speed, were able to hold a lane when in a bad position and felt good downwind.

Sunday was supposed to be another full day of practice but the wind has not cooperated. It has been 30-38kts of wind for most of the day and we are hoping that we might get an hour or so in the evening.

Our new designs offer greater speed and control on the racecourse, especially in their ability to achieve optimal power when going up the wind range. We will continue to offer our World-Championship winning mainsail design.

NEW Spinnaker Design - Introducing the STEP Spinnaker: The new spinnaker is both quick and stable, showing exceptional results in transitioning to low-wind planing (commonly referred to getting on the step). This sail has been designed with additional panels compared to other sails on the racecourse. These panels, arranged in a sophisticated layout, make for a smoother spinnaker that has less stretch, enhancing flow and control.

NEW Jib Design - Introducing the J1-AP Jib: The new jib is designed for speed across wind range with more power and ease of use in greater pressure. And, as with our previous design, the J1-AP can still inhaul for pointing and greater power in the leech when needed.

2015 ULLMAN SAILS J/70 CLASS RESULT HIGHLIGHTS
• 1st place 2015 J/70 World Championships*
• 1st place 2015 J/70 World Championships(Corinthian Division)*
• 1st place 2015 COWES Week J/70 Short Series*
• 1st place 2015 J/70 North American
Championships (Corinthian Division)*
1st place 2015 J/70 Charleston Race Week*
• 1st place 2015 J/70 Cal Race Week
• 1st place 2015 J/70 Long Beach Race Week*
• 2nd place 2015 J/70 Class Key West Race Week*
• 2nd place 2015 St. Petersburg NOOD J/70 Class*
*partial inventory

To learn more about our new J/70 offerings head over to our website: http://www.ullmansails.com/j70
It is important to make furling as easy as possible on your system (whether manual or electric/hydraulic). Therefore, to furl while sailing upwind you must ease the sheet until the sail partially flogs. This is not great for the sail material, and if you lose control of the sheet the flogging can become dramatic, risking a blowout.

Thus, when you are preparing to furl it is best to steer so that the wind and sea are well aft of the beam. Then, when you ease the sheet the headsail will sit lazily behind the lee of the mainsail and furling becomes much easier. Ideally you should ease and furl at the same rate in order to make a neat furl.

If you plan on only partially furling the sail as the wind comes up, then I have another recommendation. After you bear off to furl the sail and have the desired amount of sail rolled up, and while you are still sailing off the breeze, you can effectively pre-sheet the headsail to its upwind position while the sail is not carrying a load. From your racing days you might recall the difficulty of sheeting in an over-eased headsail after a mark rounding by presheeting we avoid this drama. Once pre-sheeted and after heading back up on the wind, you can make minor adjustments.

These habits save the sails, they also make for a safer and less pressurized maneuver as you are sailing upright
and off the wind while doing the work. And while a little distance is lost – don’t forget we are cruising!
