ISLANDS RACE: USOC Race #1

San Diego, CA

The script was written beautifully; new race, lots of boats, great race course, loads of competition, how could this possibly not be Hollywood? Well, Newport Harbor YC and San Diego YC ran the inaugural "Islands Race" as perfect as if this was the 100th race, not the first race!

The staggered start worked perfect as the higher handicapped PHRF class boats left about 3 hours ahead of the speedy sleds and SoCal 52 classes. The Westerly wind kicked in and had the fleet around the West end of Catalina well on their way to San Clemente Island before sunset!Magnitude 80 was first to finish
Ullman Sails customers enjoyed the good wind and had their sails pulling them to a quick finish.Paul Stemler and crew took first in their class on the J-44 "Patriot". The Richley Family sailed their Choate 48 "Amante" to second place closely followed by Seth Hall's J-124 "Marisol" who used all Ullman Sails spinnakers to lead the way!
