J/80 FLEET, J/24 Fleet to compete in the 2012 Audi Cup Charity Regatta, sponsored by Audi Mission Viejo!

Dana Point Yacht Club race chair David Bolton announced that the J/80 Sport Boat fleet has been invited to compete along with the returning J/24 Fleet in the 2012 Audi Cup, the One-Design Racing component of the Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta. The regatta sponsor, Audi Mission Viejo, along with Dana Point Yacht Club chose to invite the J/80s for their agility, acceleration, and top end downwind speeds.

Bolton said; “We are anticipating a great turnout this year, and we have committed this Audi Cup One- Design slot to the J/80 Fleet not only for this year, but again in 2013 and beyond. We expect that when the National J/80 Fleet sees the pictures of the winning crew decked out in their custom Audi Team jackets, and learns that the regatta is run flawlessly by a highly qualified team, headed by Principal Race Officer Barry Senescu, on the beautiful turquoise waters off Doheny Beach, they are going to start making plans for the 2013 Audi Cup!”

The J/24 Fleet will once again compete in the Audi Cup for the penultimate prize, a brand new Ullman Sails spinnaker with Audi Logo! “This is an exceptional prize for a sailboat regatta, and is akin to winning a new engine in an automobile race!”, Bolton opined. “One of this year’s J/24 entries is a youth boat from the Dana Point Sea Scout “Ship”, and after some recent success in local Thursday night racing, I don’t think the adult teams should take them for granted.”
