February Acapulco Regatta Report

Team Ullman Members, Bruce Cooper and Keith Magnussen, traveled to Acapulco this February to participate in the monthly regatta at Club de Yates Acapulco. This months theme was "Habla Bien de Acapulco."  This, being Keith's second time to Acapulco, and Bruce's 1000th+ time, the Ullman team has always had nothing but fantastic words to say about the city and the hospitality of everyone involved at Club de Yates Acapulco. The racing is getting more and more exciting with new and old boats getting in the race scene.  Farr 40's now have three boats and there is one new TP-52 Vincitore and Iemanja and Persephone with new masts!
The February regatta saw fantastic weather and great wind for the two races. Saturday was an ocean race that saw winds of up to 20 kts, very good for the usually light wind Acapulco. The upwind leg to the ocean buoy was difficult in the wind chop and the boats that went hard left received better wind pressure and favourable currents giving them a sizable lead at the mark. The reward for a 12 mile battle upwind was a cool downwind run into Acapulco Bay to the finish under the cliffs at Las Brisas.  Winner's for the day were Flojito y Cooperando and Iemanja who respectively won their classes.

Saturday evening was the traditional bar-b-que at the club and spirits were high as the overall winners from 2010 were honored with awards for their achievements.
Sunday was a traditional Sunday race around the bay and La Roqueta in 8-12kt wind conditions and sunny near perfect temperatures. The start was exciting as the boats hoisted their spinnakers right as the gun went off.  Most boats jibed out early to gain favourable positions on starboard to the left side of the course near the beach.  Wasabi was looking powerful in A fleet as they were one of the first to head to the beach and the better jibe angle to the mark.  The B fleet was led around the course by Piet Hein who sailed very consistently all weekend and were rewarded with a first place on Sunday.  Wasabi maintained their dominance in the race to finish first in A fleet.
Ullman Sails would like to thank Club de Yates Acapulco for their hospitality and all the sailors for making these fantastic events happen.  Please log on and follow Ullman Sails TV to view the High Definition video of the weekend festivities.
