Ullman Sails Presents:
Weekend Update with Erik Shampain & Keith
Magnussen
Well folks it was a weekend
of varied conditions across Southern California. In San Diego, the third and
final Hot Rum Series race was being held. It started in partly cloudy conditions
with a brisk 12-15 knots of wind. The wind slowly built through the day as a
cloud stormed across the course bringing a downpour along with 20 knots of wind
and a 25 degree right shift causing the fleet to douse their spinnakers on the
final leg back to the finish line. Casualties on the day included one boat
hitting a Navy Pier, a missing finger, and many torn spinnakers. Rumor has it
also, that many boats enjoyed a shrimp dinner later that evening.

Working our way North, our
friends in Dana Point were met with nearly 30 knots of wind and big shifts
amongst the random rain squalls at DPYC’s Year End Regatta. Ullman Sails mostly
prevailed with 1st through 3rd in PHRF A. It was
foreseeable as 100% of PHRF A had Ullman Sails. The great news is that Doug
Hosford’s J-24, Super Strings won PHRF C using a new prototype jib.
Just a little further North,
Balboa Yacht Club’s Sunkist Series was being held. Through the day the wind
direction saw every compass point but never topped 6 knots. Challenging was a
verb heard often that day. But once again, Some Ullman Sails powered boats had
a good day. Rumor has it, there would have been more finishers if certain
people had read certain sailing intructions.

Up in Long Beach, Seal Beach
Yacht Club was hosting the Sunday Sailors Regatta. Winds were light and
variable. When asked the wind direction, one competitor replied “Up”. The Farr
40, Temptress hung in for a 2nd place in PHRF A1.
And farthest North in Santa
Barbara was the Holiday Regatta. Two days of wild conditions. Wet and wild were
Saturdays conditions and on the other extreme was Sundays light and variable
