20th Anniversary of the Delta Ditch Run

The 20th Anniversary of the Delta Ditch Run was anything but ordinary. The usually down wind race was a mostly upwind affair that saw 8 boats drop out before even getting to the Delta. The wind was upwards of 20kts blowing out of the NE at the start of the race. The upwind conditions did not favor the lighter sport boats and this year the overall winner was the classic wooden 8 Meter Yucca. Congratulations to Hank Easom and his crew on the victory. Yucca is using a brand new Carbon GPL Main from Ullman Sails.

Acapulco - San Diego Yacht Club Challenge

San Diego, California

THE MEXICANS CAME FOR BATTLE

11/5/2008

Last weekend, San Diego played host to the longstanding tradition of the Acapulco Challenge, an annual regatta where Club de Yachtes de Acapulco and San Diego Yacht Club each provide four teams to compete in a two-day battle.

The eight teams competed on four Beneteau 40.7s and four J/120s in an uncharacteristically shifty breeze ranging from 6-16 knots. The first day of racing was held outside of the harbor, while the second day was held inside. The venue for the event alternates each year between Acapulco and San Diego.

The American team on Beneteau 40.7 “Drumshanbo” took top honors in the international fleet, claiming first overall with an 8-point cushion ahead of second place. “Drumshanbo” was powered by 100% Ullman Sails inventory, showing superior speed across the wind range. "Drumshanbo," owned by Ullman Sails San Diego loft owners Kirk and Kathy O'Brien, sailed with GPL Carbon mainsail, a Technora FiberPath Light #1, a GPL Carbon Hvy #1 and an Airx 600 spinnaker.

Bruce Cooper from Ullman Sails Newport Beach, crewed as a guest on the top boat from Acapulco YC, sailing on the on the J/120 "Dr. NO" with Eduardo Saenz and crew. "Dr. NO" sailed with 100% Ullman Sails inventory.

"AMANTE" Overall Winner NOSA 14 Mile Bank Race

Newport Beach, CA

The wind for NOSA's 14 Mile Bank Race was taken from a Clint Eastwood movie title "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". PHRF Class "A" had 12 of the 14 starters finish before the 6:30 pm deadline with the Richley Family's Choate 48 "AMANTE" taking the class and fleet overall PHRF title. "AMANTE" sailed with all carbon GPL upwind sails and AirX nylon spinnakers from Ullman Sails Newport Beach. Way to go "AMANTE". Most of Class "A" finshed with some wind, that was the good.
Choate 48 "AMANTE" PHRF Class "A" and Overall Winner

The next PHRF classes could not blow into the finish behind "A" class, they had the wind drop to 3-4 knots and start shifting all over the compass. This was going to make it tight to get boats finished before the deadline! On PHRF Class "B" winner "LEGACY", we made several jibes at the end to keep in the puffs and short cut to the finish. That tactic worked out great with winning our class by 10 minutes ahead of the ever speedy Hobie 33 "Still Crazy". Both "LEGACY" and "Still Crazy" sail with 100% Ullman Sails! Only 5 of 14 starters finished, that was the bad.

The next PHRF classes only had 1 finisher from their classes. That was the ugly. Showing speed upwind to the 14 mile bank bouy and then downwind speed (with no spinnaker) Kerry Deaver and crew sailed their Andrews 43 "Kahoots" to a double class victory in the non-spinnaker class and the double-handed class! "Kahoots" sails with Fiberpath headsails from Ullman Sails. "Kahoots" beat several spinnaker boats her own size in with no spinnaker!

Bill Taylor's RP-42 "Scavenger" sailing to the finish with a rainbow to follow!

"Still Crazy" wins it all at NOSA's Argosy Race

Newport / Long Beach, California

NOSA's Argosy Race from Newport to Long Beach on Saturday and return race from Long Beach to Newport on Sunday was dominated by Ullman Sails. Upwind speed is the key to winning the uphill grind to Long Beach on the first day and downwind versatility is the secret weapon for the slide home on the second day.

Robert Plant, Erik and Jon Shampain's Hobie 33 "Still Crazy" definitely proved to have the winning speed upwind to win first in class and first overall in fleet on Saturday and had more than downwind versatility on Sunday, taking again first in class and first in fleet!
Ullman Sails' Erik Shampain raced on his Hobie 33 "Still Crazy" and provided this report:

Our race day started with a eerie fog, but was followed by ideal sailing conditions for the competitors at the Argosy Race. Saturday's race was a beat to Long Beach that started in 6 knots of wind and fog. We were hoping it would get better. The breeze was on the nose and cleared into a sunny, breezy 16 knots of wind as competitors neared the Angels Gate breakwater.
We changed from the Carbon GPL #1 to the new Carbon GPL#3 and had the boat sailing on a rail. The boat was really moving! When we got to the breakwater, we set the spinnaker to get back down to the finish and were very happy with our positioning.

PHRF classes "A" and "B" were won by boats with Ullman Sails, Wes Selby's Tripp 47 "TnT" and our Hobie 33 "Still Crazy", respectively. PHRF overall in fleet was won by our Hobie 33 featuring a new Ullman D4 Aramid mainsail, Carbon GPL #3 Jib and a new AirX 500 Code 1A spinnaker.
Sunday's blast ride home to Newport Beach started in a thick fog, but was accompanied with a wind that built to 14 knots of wind as the fleet bent out of Angels Gate. The fastest boats started after the little boats, so the race was on! At the Angels Gate jetty, the fleet set kites for a blistering reach to the oil platform. After the oil platform "chicane" the fleet settled into a moderate run to the finish. The Hobie 33 was tearing it up; we were moving great! Again, PHRF classes "A" and "B" were won by boats with Ullman Sails, Peter Bretschger's J/120 "Adios" and our Hobie 33 "Still Crazy", respectively.
"BOLT" Craig Reynolds N/M-55 (flying all Ullman Sails- GPL Carbon Main, CZ Staysail and AirX Asymmetric Spinnaker) catching and passing "Still Crazy" and Robert Plant.

Congratulations to the "Still Crazy" crew of Robert Plant, Erik Shampain, Jon Shampain, Danny Shields, Steve Harrison, Jen Scanlon and Henry Plant for winning the NOSA Argosy Trophy two years in a row!

Watch for "Still Crazy's" at the NOSA 14 Mile Bank Race this coming weekend!

Lickity Split - Catalina 38 Class National Champ!

Long Beach, CA
Joe Degenhardt and his crew on Lickity Split took a complete sweep of the 2008 Catalina 38 Nationals hosted by Shoreline Yacht Club. Lickity Split raced with all Ullman Sails and finished first in all five races and rounded every buoy in first place, except one!
Smooth water and a light breeze from the south-southwest greeted racers in the inner breakwater area. Pointing and acceleration off the start line proved to be a secret weapon for Joe. His upwind sails are a Carbon GPL AP#1 Genoa and Technora Fiberpath Main from Ullman Sails Newport Beach.Joe has owned Lickity Split for almost 30 years and has been putting Ullman Sails on board since he first started racing his boat three decades ago! Joe is a special person in the Ullman Sails family and we congratulate him on another Catalina 38 Class National Championship!

2008 SoCal PHRF Championships

August 11, 2008
San Pedro, California

Ullman Sails customers took home loads of Gold, Silver and Bronze at the 2008 SoCal PHRF Championships held by Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club this last weekend. The racing both days was in medium breeze (10-18+ knots) and short W-L courses. Speed was key!!
In the big boat PHRF Class A, Oscar Krinsky's 1D-48 "CHAYAH" claimed Gold after a tie breaker against Alec Oberschmidt's RP-50 "STAGHOUND" who settled for Silver! Only one point behind was Tres Gordo Sailing's Andrews 50 "IT'S OK" claiming the Bronze. All sailed with Ullman Sails carbon mainsails and Ullman Sails asymmetric spinnakers!
Scoring the lowest class point total of any class for the weekend was Biff Bunny's Henderson 30 "POWERPOINT" who dominated the Sport Boat Class. Taking the Gold in this class, "POWERPOINT" sailed with 100% Ullman Sails including a new Carbon GPL#3 jib that was unbelievably fast according to Ullman Sails' Erik Shampain who was crewing with Biff and the boys. Chasing "POWERPOINT" was Matt Beattie's Henderson 30 "REACH AROUND" sailing with Ullman Sails asymmetric spinnakers for a Silver.
Class C was tight for the Gold and Silver, but Mick Shlens Express 37 "BLADE RUNNER" was top of the class sailing with Ullman Sails carbon GPL main and carbon/aramid headsails! John Snook's J-120 "JIM" took the Silver with Ullman Sails an asymmetric spinnaker.
Class D Silver went to Al Castillo's Choate 33 "HOT RUM" using a wicked fast aramid #3 headsail.
