Ullman Sail Chile | Melges 24 Annual Championship

Pablo Gallayas from Ullman Sails Chile gives a brief description of the Melges 24 Annual Championship.
The 3 regattas of the past weekend are part of the annual championship that sums 30 regattas around the year.

All the owners of the Melges 24 race with their families and friends around the year. Most of them have houses around the lake so everybody gets ready from their houses and go to the starting line about 15:30.
Around this time of the day the South West winds that comes from the Pacific Ocean come up the Rapel Valley into the Lake Rapel so we can go sailing!! The wind starts almost every day at the same time.

We race 3 races with 11 boats. Wind was very shifty coming from the South West with an intensity of 8 to 12 Knots. It was fun but not easy to sail. In the afternoon the sailing day finished in the house of the Rubio's Family with a great barbecue. Meat and sausage where brought from the city of Chillan that's its famous for its sausages and meats.

This are the results from this weekend

1.- Magic Marine 1-2-1          4pts  Ullman

Team "WTF" report from Melges 24 Nationals

Congratulations ‘WTF’! Alan Field and his California based crew traveled across the country to Newport, RI for the Melges 24 Nationals. They traveled home as the newest Melges 24 National Champions. During the two days of racing the team proved once again that consistent sailing wins regattas. In light shifty conditions, the team posted a 2-6-2-1-3-4 and dropped the 6 to win the regatta by two points. “WTF” trailed JC Raby’s, ‘Evil Donut’, after day one and passed Raby on day two with solid finishes in tricky conditions. The third day was canceled due to lack of visibility. The fleet gathered at a channel marker for 3 hours waiting for the fog to lift. Finally after a long wait in near zero visibility, the race committee was forced to pull the plug and send the fleet in. The standings after Day two stood and Field and his team had on the win.

Alan and his team of Steve Hunt, Erik Shampain, Jeff Reynolds, and Sarah Curren are on a roll having just come off back to back wins at the Gulf Coast Championships in Corpus Christi and the Detroit NOOD. In addition to a crew that has sailed together consistently for 3 years together the team benefits from flying a complete Inventory of Ullman Sails. Field and company used the ‘Shark’ main, 2010 AP jib, and the new AP+ spinnaker design to fly around the course.

Melges 24 action! Detroit & Texas Style!!

Detroit, MI

2010 Detroit NOOD Regatta

Photo Credit: Andy Burdick @ Melges Performance Sailboats

Team ‘WTF’ convincingly wins the Melges 24 class at the Detroit NOOD by 29 points! In a fleet of 18 boats and predominately light shifty conditions, ‘WTF’ surely possessed some special magic. The California based team skippered and organized by Alan Field is on a winning streak having just won the 2010 Gulf Coast Championships in Corpus Christi, Texas (see Erik's report below). Alan’s team is made up of Jeff Reynolds, Sarah Curran, Tactician Steve Hunt, and Ullman Sails Newport Beach’s One Design Coordinator, Erik Shampain.

Consistency shows in her 1-1-8-3-1-2-2-1-2 scorecard. Amongst the benefit of having a rock solid team, a solid owner/ driver and a professionally run boat, Alan’s team benefits from the countless hours spent by Ullman Sails to develop fast sails. ‘WTF’ uses an all Ullman Inventory to power here to the podium.

Even amongst a little excitement the team prevailed. In the first race of the last day, a lifeline connector broke and sent the four crew members swimming. Fast action by Field led to a quick recovery and the team sailed on to loose only one boat and finish second in the race!

Next up for the ‘WTF’ team is the Melges 24 Nationals in Newport, RI.

Strong, warm winds met 10 competitors on this “to be” venue of the 2011 Melges 24 World Championships. Corpus lived up to its reputation throwing 18-28k knots of wind at the fleet for three days. Only 8 races were scored over two days after the final day was abandoned to lighting, thunder, and the fleet’s lack of desire to be on the racecourse with lightning.

Finishing on top of the leader board was Alan Field’s “WTF” team of Steve Hunt, Jeff Reynolds, Sarah Curran, and Ullman Sails own One Design Coordinator, Erik Shampain. “WTF” uses 100% inventory from Ullman Sails and used the new AP+ spinnaker design to finish with only first and second places on her score card. “WTF” was followed by Scott Holmgren’s “Rosebud”, Simon Strauss’ “Simplicity”, and Kristen Lane’s “Brickhouse” respectively.

“Simplicity” and “Brickhouse” flew an all Ullman Sails upwind inventory as well to help them to the podium.

The Melges 24 fleet is already getting exited to come back in a year for the Worlds Championships and experience the great weather, venue, hospitality, and committee work. For full results visit www.ccyc.com.

Melges 24, Melges 32 & J-105 at Key West Race Week.......Days 3&4

Key West, Florida

The sailing conditions are proving to reward good boat speed and good tactics. Alan Field's Melges 24 "WTF" is the top amatuer helms person and top American boat in arguably the most talented fleet at Key West Race Week this year. "WTF" won race #7 by a ridiculous time of almost 3 minutes...way to go Cali boys!
Dave Ullman who is crewing on Alex Jackson's Melges 32 "Leenabarca" from Newport, Rhode Island has turned on the heat and steadied out in 5th place. Alex, Dave and crew are only 2 points out of 3rd in the Melges 32 fleet of 20 boats! The J-105's have had three different leaders over the last three days. Back on top of the fleet is Ullman Sails customer Brian Keene racing "FLAME" who is being chased by another Ullman Sails customer Gerrit Schulze racing "MAX POWER" who is in 3rd overall. Ullman Sails have won 5 out of 8 races so far!for full results and photo's

Another moderate breeze on day 2 with wind between 13-18 knots. Alan Field's Melges 24, "WTF" showed blazing upwind speed and great tactical calls to lead the fleet all the way around the four leg course of the first race of then day. Even after a blown tack line on the first run and a brief drop to second place, the California based team romped right back to the front and stayed there. In race two of the day, Alan's team stayed strong through shifty conditions to take a 6th place. The total day's total catapulted them into 5th overall and the top American boat.
Blu Moon from Switzerland is racing with the Ullman Dacron main and sailed very consistent taking a pair of deuces to hold onto second overall in this highly competitive fleet.
On the J-105 course, Brian Keane's "Savasana" is leading the pack with a stunning 3,2,1,1 finish!

Key West, FL

2009 Key West Race WeekNo problem with speed! Alan Field's Melges 24, "WTF" from California Yacht Club featuring an all upwind Ullman Sails Inventory rounded the first upwind mark of the first race in 1st place just in front of the current World Champions. In the first race, a 60 degree shift from a large rain cloud on the first run caused a fall to 13th in the end. Sailing off the start line with speed, "WTF" rounded the first upwind mark of the second race in 2nd place! Alan and crew ended the day with a 13 and a 4, and lie in 8th place. Alan's success is shared with Tactician Steve Hunt, Jeff Reynolds, Sarah Curran, and Ullman Sails Newport's own Production Manager Erik Shampain.

Blu Moon lies in second featuring the 4 time Melges 24 World Championship winning Ullman Sails Dacron Main.
